The Gorge of Garni

The Gorge of Garni stretches along the river Azat. It is famous for its beautiful rocks that seem like artificial and are compiled of symmetrical hexagonal shafts known as the “Symphony of Stones". The river Azat starts from the south-western slope of the mountain range of Geghama, passes through the forest of Khosrov and flows Garni gorge The length of the river is 55km. The river flows into the Ararat Valley in the lower reaches. It has drastic fall and a rocky bottom. Azat generally feeds on the underground waters. It brims over since April to June. The unispan bridge of the 13th century is situated near the village of Garni, over the river Azat. The temple of Garni and the monastic complex of Havuts Tar are located in the upper part of the gorge.
