The Blue Mosque of Yerevan

The Blue Mosque of Yerevan was built by Sardar Hussain Ali Khan in 1766. The Blue Mosque belongs to a number of mosques in the direction of Shiism. It is the most beautiful and the largest mosque in Yerevan. It is a large square building, with a high minaret and a dome with a broad base. Minaret is built of brick. The dome and part of the walls are covered with blue faience. There are constructed a number of small outbuildings in the corners and in front of the main mosque, which with the main mosque surround a beautiful and spacious square courtyard. There was built a small pool in the center of the courtyard and there is a wide and carefully tiled area covered by shady trees around the pool. The mosque has three entrances, the two small entrances are in the eastern and western sides, and the large one is in the southern side. The Blue Mosque consists of three arched halls, which are connected with each other. Above the highest room, which is located in the middle, rises its dome. The two adjacent rooms are small and have lower ceilings. On the northern side of the courtyard is located a small sanctuary. The minaret was the highest point of the buildings of Old Yerevan and attracted attention from afar.
